Episode of the Week: January 27-Feburary 2

Show: New Girl

Episode Title: Cooler

There was no question in my mind about which episode should be chosen this week. How could I not choose an episode that caused as much happiness and flailing online as this week’s episode of New Girl?

This episode showed the best of what New Girl can do. This show is about 4 rather dysfunctional roommates who you can’t help but love and each of them shined in this episode.

Best moments: Obviously, the kiss between Nick and Jess stole the episode. Their chemistry and relationship potential has been obvious since early on in the first season and that kiss was so full of passion and heat and it showed what could be in the future. It was completely not like Nick while being perfectly in character. I love that Nick used the last bit of his trenchcoat-induced confidence to do what he was never brave enough to do otherwise.

The other best part of this episode was the return of True American. I was thrilled that they brought it back since the first episode with it was such a hit. All of those scenes are fun and full of a palpable energy that reaches through the screen and makes you (or maybe just me) wish that I could play along. Making that level of excitement and crazy drunkenness feel so real to the viewer is rare, but those moments pull it off.

Other stand-out moments in this episode: Everything Winston related. Nick on the window ledge and Schmidt fainting because he was worried about him. Schmidt saying the word “discotheque”. Sam joining in the chanting for Nick and Jess to kiss.

What I didn’t love: Absolutely nothing. This was truly New Girl at its best.

  1. I was so hoping you’d pick this episode as your episode of the week! I have honestly been able to think of little since this happened. I’ve watched it six times already (with a certain scene watched probably an additional 20 times). It was just so fun. The pacing was brilliant, the timing in every storyline was flawless, and the kiss was honestly one of the best I’ve ever seen on TV. All in all, it was a pretty perfect half-hour of TV.

And if you ever want to travel to Buffalo to play True American, you’d have a partner waiting for you. 😉
