In the relatively short amount of time that I have been following award shows for television, I have never been as happy with a group of nominees as I am with the ones for these awards. While many awards show staples were included, they also included many actors, actresses, and shows that are typically under-recognized by awards committees. Since there are 22 different categories and one large post with all of them would have been slightly unwieldy, I decided to break my predictions up into two posts. This post will include my predictions for the movie/miniseries, reality, talk show, and animated categories and my predictions for the drama and comedy shows will be up tomorrow.
American Horror Story: Asylum
Behind the Candelabra
The Crimson Petal and the White
Top of the Lake
Prediction: While American Horror Story is a strong contender, Top of the Lake was so praised that I don’t see how it won’t win.
Best Actor in a Movie/Miniseries
Benedict Cumberbatch as Christopher Tietjens (Parade’s End)
Matt Damon as Scott Thorson (Behind the Candelabra)
Michael Douglas as Liberace (Behind the Candelabra)
Toby Jones as Alfred Hitchcock (The Girl)
Al Pacino as Phil Spector (Phil Spector)
Dominic West as Hector Madden (The Hour)
Prediction: This is a race that is really only between Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Douglas. Benedict Cumberbatch has had an extraordinary couple of years and he once again drew praise for his role in Parade’s End. However, I’m going to guess that this will go to Michael Douglas.
Best Actress in a Movie/Miniseries
Angela Bassett as Coretta Scott King (Betty & Coretta)
Romola Garai as Bel Rowley (The Hour)
Rebecca Hall as Sylvia Tietjens (Parade’s End)
Jessica Lange as Sister Jude/Judy Martin (American Horror Story: Asylum)
Elisabeth Moss as Detective Robin Griffin (Top of the Lake)
Sigourney Weaver as Elaine Barrish (Political Animals)
Prediction: Just as Top of the Lake will win for best movie/miniseries, it’s leading lady Elisabeth Moss will take home the title of Best Actress in a Movie/Miniseries.
Best Supporting Actor in a Movie/Miniseries
James Cromwell as Dr. Arthur Arden/Hans Grüper (American Horror Story: Asylum)
Peter Mullan as Matt Mitcham (Top of the Lake)
Zachary Quinto as Dr. Oliver Thredson (American Horror Story: Asylum)
Sebastian Stan as Thomas “T.J.” Hammond (Political Animals)
David Wenham as Detective Al Parker (Top of the Lake)
Thomas M. Wright as Johnno Mitcham (Top of the Lake)
Prediction: Zachary Quinto got a lot of attention and praise for his role on American Horror Story: Asylum and after seeing Heroes, we all know he can play creepy very well, so I think he’ll win.
Best Supporting Actress in a Movie/Miniseries
Ellen Burstyn as Margaret Barrish (Political Animals)
Sienna Miller as Tippi Hedren (The Girl)
Sarah Paulson as Lana Winters (American Horror Story: Asylum)
Lily Rabe as Sister Mary Eunice McKee (American Horror Story: Asylum)
Imelda Staunton as Alma Reville (The Girl)
Alfre Woodard Louisa “Ouiser” Boudreaux (Steel Magnolias)
Prediction: The award for Best Supporting Actress in a Movie/Miniseries will also go to someone from American Horror Story. I think it’s Sarah Paulson but Lily Rabe winning wouldn’t surprise me either.
Best Animated Series
Phineas and Ferb
Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Prediction: While I wouldn’t be surprised if Adventure Time won, I think the award will go to Archer.
Best Reality Series
Small Town Security
Wild Things with Dominic Monaghan
Prediction: Duck Dynasty should and will win for it’s current status as pop culture phenomenon.
Best Reality Series – Competition
So You Think You Can Dance
Prediction: I have no doubt that The Voice will take home this award for their success in breathing new life to televised singing competitions.
Best Reality Host
Tom Bergeron (Dancing With the Stars)
Cat Deeley (So You Think You Can Dance)
Gordon Ramsay (Hell’s Kitchen/Masterchef)
RuPaul (RuPaul’s Drag Race)
Ryan Seacrest (American Idol)
Kurt Warner (The Moment)
Prediction: Tom Bergeron is my personal choice and prediction to win this one though I could reasonably see RuPaul pulling off a surprise win.
Best Talk Show
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
The Ellen DeGeneres Show
Jimmy Kimmel Live!
Late Night with Jimmy Fallon
Prediction: I could see past winners Jon Stewart or Jimmy Fallon taking home another award, but I have a feeling it will go to Conan.
